WATERHAMMER/SURGE ANALYSIS
IN LNG PIPING SYSTEMS

The conflict with Russia is driving countries to source O&G products elsewhere, booming the LNG market. Shifts in the market come with an increased need for waterhammer/surge analysis on systems like pipelines and unloading terminals. Engineers need to plan for upset events and ensure effective safety measures. They can use AFT Impulse™ to protect all human and non-human life.

HARMFUL VAPORIZATION IN
LNG TRANSPORTATION

LNG is typically transported near the fluid's vapor pressure, begging for vaporization. This is problematic. Vapor pockets are dangerous because they can collapse and cause large upsurges in pressure throughout a system.
Usually, low pressures aren't in the conversation when talking about waterhammer, but they
are a major risk. Learn more about harmful vaporization, which we refer to as transient cavitation, in this webinar.

HOW AFT IMPULSE CAN HELP IDENTIFY SURGE IN LNG SYSTEMS

Sean McGuffie presented a technical paper on surge issues in LNG offloading terminals at an ASME PVP conference. He used AFT Impulse to model the systems and show the effects of waterhammer. Read more about surge in LNG systems and how Impulse can help identify problems and test solutions.

RECORDED WEBINAR
AFT Impulse 9,
You're In For a Great Time

We have yet again taken AFT Impulse many steps
forward with our newest version that contains some
powerful AFT Impulse specific new features including:

  • Dramatic re-design of the Gas Accumulator
junction with the ability to calculate liquid heights
    for various accumulator geometries
  • Minor losses for elbows, orifice plates,
venturis, and screens can now be
    explicitly modeled as junctions
  • Valve transients can now be modeled
as open percentage vs. time in addition
to the traditional Cv vs. time or K factor vs.
    time methods
  • Multi-scenario graphs can be plotted
    when scenarios use different pipe
    sectioning and time steps

There are many other new features that enhance the user’s experience and efficiency of the software like the new Analysis Setup window, Library Manager which was created from our previous Database structure for customization, Warning and Design Alert re-organization, improved non-Newtonian fluid modeling that includes the Herschel-Bulkley method as a new viscosity model, and many others.
